RESPECT - DIVERSITY - EDUCATION

“Tom and his pot-bellied pig were a definite hit with the students who were learning about the pitfalls of prejudice...” Lynn Uram, Carroll County Public Schools, MD.

Educational School Assembly Programs for Elementary Schools.

We live in a diverse society.  Different races, religions, cultures, customs, languages and the list goes on.  The fact is - EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT!

"...you managed to discuss and describe stereo typing and prejudicial matters in a very understandable and memorable way." - Maxine Bukowitz,  Carrolltowne Elementary, MD.

Children perceive differences at successive stages of their development. Individual differences can become generalized into stereotypes. Prejudice is learned, is contagious and affects all of us. Hurting one another through prejudice only escalates hatred and violence. Differences don’t go away. By learning to respect differences and see them as a source of strength in our lives and society, we can beat prejudice.

"Your performance got the audience to think about what it means to have integrity, respect and tolerance for other people." - Maxine Bukowitz,  Carrolltowne Elementary, MD.

Tom Crowl has created a program specifically geared to grades pre-K through 5.   He combines information with magic - guaranteed to hold student attention from beginning to end.

"Our students were enthralled with you from the moment you began."
- Karen C. Rogers, Spring Garden Elementary, MD.

Students will learn the meanings of stereotype, prejudice and discrimination through the use of non-threatening, visual examples. A trained Vietnamese Pot-bellied Pig is used to draw out popular misconceptions (stereotypes and prejudices) and explode them with information.

"I think Mr. Crowl did a fabulous job.  He really got the kids' attention and his messages were very effective." - Mrs. C, Northwest Elementary School, PA.

Students will discover how to believe in themselves. People who believe in and feel good about themselves are less likely to feel the need to hate others. Most importantly, children will learn how our thoughts can affect our actions making it important not to pre-judge people, places or even animals!

"He made his point about not prejudging people (or animals!) through humor and magic and with the use of student helpers." - Mrs. O, Northwest Elementary School, PA.

The assembly acts as a springboard for discussions, allowing teachers to break new ground in the classroom. Examples from the program can be used to discuss situations that affect students’ everyday life.

"He constantly kept the audience engaged and discussed the topic at an appropriate level for this age group.  After the assembly, my class shared what they had learned about understanding differences.  Mr. Crowl communicated the message effectively." - Mrs. F., Northwest Elementary School, PA.

Our goal is to prepare all children to respect and admire one another’s differences, creating a community that lives and works harmoniously alongside others who represent various racial and cultural groups, backgrounds and abilities.

"...demonstrates the importance of such traits as respect, responsibility, integrity & perseverance.  I highly recommend him..." - Lisa Duvall, Cranberry Station Elementary, MD.

Tom performed with Bob Keeshan's Captain Kangaroo

Tom has years of experience working with children in an educational capacity.  In addition to his school programs, Tom performed with Bob Keeshan, the original Captain Kangaroo and worked with Baltimore television personality Stu Kerr's Professor Kool.

Although both men are now deceased, Tom will always appreciate what he learned from these gentlemen and respect their contributions to the educational community.
