A Note To
School Assembly Program Coordinators

Dear Assembly Coordinator,

This program was originally developed for a seminar on Cultural Diversity.  Guidance counselors attending the seminar encouraged me to offer the program for school assemblies.  Since 9/11 and Columbine shook the United States, it has become increasingly important that we learn to respect others.  We should respect others as individuals - not simply place stereotypes upon them because they are different.  WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT!

My Educational Assembly Program drives these points home without specifically mentioning any event, ethnicity, religion or culture.  While not exactly the lightest of issues, this high energy assembly will keep your students laughing AND inform them of important concepts on a level they can grasp.  We guarantee you will be happy with the results.

In addition to a quality program, I promise you will find me easy to work with, dependable and adaptable to your needs.  I'm even happy to customize the program to highlight school themes and curriculum that fall within the subject matter.

If you'd like to discuss scheduling a program for your school, please call me now at (410) 876-6771.  I hope I may be of service.

Sincerely,

Tom Crowl

PROGRAM DISCUSSION

Lately I've been getting numerous e-mails from people who are afraid the program may promote a certain lifestyle - or not go into a particular culture deeply enough.

At no time in the program is any particular group or culture mentioned.  I do not promote any lifestyle or religion.  That is not teaching acceptance, that is teaching about that particular lifestyle, religion or culture.

Quite honestly, these e-mails prove that teaching acceptance of differences is more important than ever.  Parents and educators should be certain however that it is not my job to teach or promote any of the above.

PLEASE REMEMBER:

This program was developed for ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS - children between the ages of 5 and 12.  The program teaches the topic of Cultural Diversity on its most basic level - acceptance and respect of differences.

The assembly program teaches about differences and stereotypes by relating to things that children understand.  Examples of groups are "magicians" and "grade levels" pertaining to the age group attending the program.  Examples of stereotypes are things possibly associated with those groups.  It is easy to see how they do not apply when stereotypes are directed in that manner.

For prejudice - it is my role to help them see how negative opinions become prejudices.  Through presenting information, students realize opinions can be wrong and affect how we as individuals interact with others.

The goal of this program is to teach students to keep an open mind and learn about others rather than judge based on second hand information.  Parents and teachers can use the program as a springboard to launch their own discussions.  This program merely opens the door by providing valuable information from a safe and different perspective.
